Paraphrase et reformulation : un chassé-croisé entre deux notions

Abstract : This contribution is devoted to the question of the links between the two notions of ‘paraphrase ’and ‘reformulation’. We first recall that these two notions were registered within successive linguistic currents arising from two distinct historical traditions (§1.), Then we focus on the contemporary problematic of ' paraphrastic reformulation’ (§2.). We recall that the presence of a specialized connector is sufficient to speak of paraphrastic reformulation, but not necessary (iff the two segments are semantically equivalent). We then study the case of remote reformulations, where the succession of modulated variants undermines transitivity, a constitutive property of equivalence; the deformations generated by a proliferation of variants can lead to real bifurcations (incompatible versions of the same event or state of affairs). In conclusion, the notion of paraphrastic reformulation, closely linked to those of equivalence and synonymy, must be placed in the broader framework of the conservation / deformation of meaning - which requires a conceptual apparatus capable of accounting for the semantic continuum ranging from absolute identity (tautological reduplication) to radical otherness (contradiction) through various types of variants.
