Saint-Jean-Baptiste d'Urc, une « exclave » architecturale à l'ouest du Vayoc‘ Jor

Abstract : The article presents some observations on the architecture and sculpted decoration of St. John the Baptist of Urc/Urtz, a monastery of early 14th century in Ararat region, on the occasion of the publication in 2017 of a book devoted to it by R. Abgaryan and E. T'umanyan. In particular, the article examines the links between this ensemble and the contemporary monuments (Mongol period) of the neighbouring Vayots Dzor region, as well as its specificities. The alarming state of conservation of the monastic complex, the main part of which has slid towards the valley, requires urgent stabilization work. The remains of a very large khatchkar discovered by R.A and E.T. near the village of Geghashen in the Kotayk’ region are briefly presented. When it was whole, in its frame, this remarkable but very damaged work was more than six and a half meters high. It can be attributed to the monastery’s sculptor, Sargis vardapet.
